thank you to cloth & kind!

just wanted to say thank you to the the girls of cloth & kind, krista nye schwartz and tami jennings for teh lovely feature they posted about my shapes collection rugs, along with a little impromptu video interview.

tami, krista and myself, in my woven accents window during #LCDQLA, along with our long time buddy, marissa marcantonio from style beat blog
tami and krista were my "neighbors" this year at #LCDQLA legends, designing the window at sydney harbour paints, just down the block from my window at woven accents. of course they kicked ass, but most importantly, it was fun to have friends working just down the street! i loved being able to visit with them, and hope they come back to LA soon!

xo, girls, and thank you! click here to read.

la cienega design quarter's 6th annual "legends of la cienega" may 7-9th! (oh yeah, AND MY RUGS!!!!)

i can hardly contain my excitement right now! in a little over two weeks, the 6th annual "legends of la cienega" design festival gets underway with 3 days of fabulous window installations, parties, panels and general awesomeness. the theme this year is "novel interiors; story telling by design" and i am delighted to be designing the window of woven accents on melrose along of a theme of the classic novel, "the 1001 arabian nights".
i am also trés excited because this festival brings together not only all my friends from here in los angeles, but also design friends from all over the world! i mean, look at the stellar roster of my buddies assembled to be social media ambassadors!

last, as you may know, i am also debuting my first line of licensed rugs for 27 ground & woven accents in conjunction with my window installation, and can't wait to unleash my designs on the world. for the last 6 months, i've also been hyping my launch party which was to happen pre-legends, but unfortunately, there are too many events associated with the festival for me to secure a date and time for my little soiree, so instead i invite you to stop by friday, may 9th at 4:00 before the domaine home panel at woven accents to preview my rugs and share a glass of wine with me  (invite above- panel starts at 4:30). i'm superstoked to finally be sharing my collection with the world, so i hope you'll stop by!

see you on la cienega! (and on melrose at woven accents, directly across from the PDC!)

ps- my rugs will also be at ICFF in NYC may 17th-20th, booth 2166!

october events in southern california!

good gosh almighty- fall is here with a BANG! so many great events happening over the next few weeks:

i will be reuniting with veronika miller of modenus as she brings her signature phenomenon, blogtour, to los angeles for the first time! so excited for this opportunity to hang out with my social media friends from around the globe. jill seidner of material girls and i, as blogtour london alumni, will be hosting the #blogtourLA gang on wednesday for a brief visit to the la cienega design quarter and the west hollywood design district, with hosted stops at dragonette and mecox gardens. partay!

then there is the premier of the westedge design fair, sure to be chock full of the best in cutting edge design. i know that some of my favorite lighting peeps, zia-priven, have been working on something BIG and special to decorate barker hanger during the event running october 3-6, so can't wait for that!
and the following week, look for me at one of my favorite events, the los angeles antiques art + design show at its new location in culver city, oct 9-13.  i'll be stopping in over the weekend for a panel or two, but will for sure be at the star studded opening night to benefit teh decorative arts and design council at LACMA, a great cause!
and in the midst of all this madness, i'll be part of a panel on "career blogging" at design camp orange county, oct 9-11 (i'll be focusing on blogging to brand and build a design career. i might have some experience in that arena. or not). speaking at 9am on the 11th will be interesting, since my brain doesn't turn on 'til noon, so who knows what i'll say?) there are just a couple seats left for camp so GET ON IT!  ;-)
then, on the 14th, i sleep. ;-)

one week from today... (LCDQ #legends2013)

please join me one week from today as i try to be entertaining at 10:30 in the morning! mornings are not my finest hour, but i promise i'll do my best to discuss "reinventing upholstery from earlier eras", and if nothing else, i'll explain to you why i think the 80's are coming back and why you are powerless to stop it. (or whatever else happens to pop into my silly little head).

see you at gina berschneider furniture for LCDQ legends 2013 in one week!!! RSVP here!

LCDQLA: legends 2013! (may 8-10)

today, i am busy getting caught up after my biannual whirlwind trip to high point, but that doesn't mean i'm not thinking ahead to the next flurry of cocktails and design on my calendar, the la cienega design quarters annual "legends" event
maison21 legends 2012

"legends" is one of my favorite LA events, and if y'all recall, i was one of the window display designers at legends last year and i had a blast! this year, no window for me- too busy- but i'm going to take part in as many panels and parties as my schedule permits, and i'm very excited to see what my fellow LA designer friends like jamie and ron of woodson & rummerfield, and molly luetkemeyer of m design come up with! (you can read about all the fun in my blog recaps of past legends events here).

events are filling up fast, so register today, and i'll see YOU on la cienega, may 8th - 10th!

black crow studios & tracy hiner (things we love)

not so far back, i gave a shout out post of gratitude to the good people at grace home furnishings for supplying me with that amazing screen for my LCDQ window last may, but i only thanked half of the peeps responsible for the beautiful screen. today it's time to thank the other half, tracy hiner and black crow studios (only a year later... but hey, better late than never ;-)
tracy in front of her beautiful wallpaper. not only is she pretty and wildly talented, she's just totally awesome and one of my favorite people.
i met tracy a couple years back and instantly liked her (she's dog people after all- if you are one too, you know that carries a lot of weight), and though i knew she did some cool wallpaper, i only saw some smaller scale samples of her work, and i sort filed her wallpaper away as "someday, i'd like to use that".  it wasn't until i saw a full room installation by wendy schwartz at the greystone mansion de luxe showhouse did "someday" turn into "if i don't get to use that amazing wallpaper TODAY, i might die".  melodramatic, yes, but seriously, i was that excited about it, and you know us designers, we can be slightly melodramatic at times. (ok, all the time...)
wendy schwartz at the maison de luxe showhouse.
so when asked to do a window for the legends 2012 event a few months later, i knew exactly what i wanted to use- some kick ass black crow studios wall paper! only problem was is that i had no actual walls for wallpaper, hence the idea of an 8 foot tall screen to create a wall where there was none. i also knew i wanted to use sunshine and swimming pools for my color inspiration, so using tracy's watercolor wallpaper in beautiful blues was a no brainer. the rest was sheer delight...
more black crow studios wallpaper  in a beautiful room by the talented eileen kathryn boyd
after tracy and i talked about my concept, and she agreed to generously supply me with her paper for my window, i sent her a schematic of my screen and she sent me back a bunch of sample layouts to choose from. which wasn't easy to do- they all looked fantastic.
this was my favorite, but i decided it wouldn't effectively convey the water theme, since it looks more like an impressionist masterpiece. someday, i'm going to recreate the screen for my own home and use this layout. i freaking love it and still, a year later, dream about it.
this was the layout selected. watery and beautiful, and would read really nicely from the street- not of small importance for a widow display.
then, a few weeks later, tracy delivered my wallpaper, and even helped me apply it to my screen!
the raw screen from grace home.
tracy used a self-adhesive, removable and repositional vinyl for the panels.
so easy, even a monkey could do it!
and taa-daa! the screen was finished, about 45 minutes later. would have been faster, but i'm a talker.
;-)
tracy and have since collaborated again on the original "memphis" wallpaper for my california home + design show house bath, and i can't wait to collaborate again and again in the future. she's a genius at what she does, and that inspires me to step up to the bar when i work with her- the results are always magic. keep an eye on black crow studios- i have a feeling the best is yet to come! and thank you tracy- your support and friendship is amazing! xo.

gina berschneider furniture

y'all remember this, right?  my technicolor "palm springs" themed window from the la cienega design quarter "legends 2012" event last spring? well, besides the monkey (and teh screen from  grace home furnishings with the amazing black crow studios wallpaper), the star of the show was the pair of custom yellow chairs made for me by gina berschneider furniture... and guess what? YOU get an opportunity to purchase them this friday morning during gina's exclusive tastemaker tag sale on one kings lane! (11am EST/ 8 am PST). better get up early and be fast on teh draw- i might be buying them back all for me! i loved those chairs...
the design from teh gina berschneider archives that caught my eye
working with the shop foreman to customize my design, turning their stock lounge chair frame into a pull-up sized chair for my needs.
i always know my upholstered goods are going to turn out great when i work with gina- she oversees every detail.
meeting gina, rolf and their daughter natalie was one the the highlights of my "legends" experience, and i've had a blast working with them ever since!  upholstery is in gina's DNA, so our legends collaboration was completely delightful- from picking out a vintage chair design from gina's extensive archives, to visiting the factory to go over the details of the design (we altered the dimensions of the chair to suit our needs while keeping it stylistically in sync with our vision) and we learned lots about upholstery from gina herself (she is VERY hands on- this a family owned and operated business!)
the waterfall desk is a gina berschneider casegood piece available exclusively through the showroom

the "le grand" bolster back chairs and sofa are a personal favorite- overscale goodness for those cavernous so cal living rooms.

now, whenever we find ourself shopping on la cienega, we always stop into the spacious gina berschnieder showroom just to say "hey" and relax and chat for a minute, even if upholstered goods aren't on our shopping list for the day. the gina berschneider showroom also has a fabric sample room right in the shop with gina's own fabrics, as well as schumacher, highland court, edelman leather and loro piana woolens- so whether you want to design your own custom piece or choose one of gina's classic frames, it's one stop shopping from design to fabric!
gina loves an animal print. i knew we'd get along just fine...
and as we said for those of you who can't make it into teh la cienega showroom, gina is coming to YOU this friday via one kings lane!

i love you, chairy!
and when next you find yourself on la cienega, stop in and say hello to gina, rolf and natalie! tell them maison21 sent you!

what a funny, crazy little world it is. the sheep in jane's window graced my living room for about a year but too many life-size animals in one room are no good, so i sold it when i acquired mr. monkey- who of course graced my own window!
