it's official...

the christmas season is officially here.

what?

you thought it started with black friday?

wrong!

here at the maison21 atelier, it started with tedious tuesday- as while killing time waiting on a four hour window for the freight delivery of a large mirror (which sadly arrived smashed, btw), we hung the last of our bazillion ornaments on the m21 kmart/biglots/99cent store tree. all we need now is some prezzies underneath to complete the picture (they'd help hide that ugly wire base, too). seriously, we can't express the tedium involved in hanging our hundreds and hundreds of monochromatic silver and white ornaments: randomly hang different sizes and shades of glass balls. step back, squint, then adjust randomness to a more visually appealing version of randomness. step back, squint, and repeat- ad nauseum. we need to hire a special assistant for this kinda stuff! maybe next year we'll post an intern position at a local college design department: "elf-like student with excellent manual dexterity and incredible patience, needed to bring xmas cheer to design atelier/home".

in the end, even if we had to submit to the tedium all by our lonesome, the results were worth it, because as of tedious tuesday, it's beginning to feel a lot like christmas...

happy holiday decorating to those of you still in the process- thank god m21 is done! (as in over it, done).

Wow, your tree is bee-YOO-ti-ful!!! And even the wire base doesn't look so bad (it's almost saarinen-esque or something!) Bravo!

I'm kinda obsessed with your faux white Christmas tree!!! I have been toying with the idea for these last couple of weeks and you seeing your amazing tree really makes me want to take the plunge! I'll have to confirm with the man, but hopefully it will be a white christmas for me this year.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Wow! You're on the ball. We haven't yet begun. I think we'll get the tree in a week or so, chill the champagne (well crèmant this year) and have at it.

My friend, the architect, used to decorate some friends' trees. That is a true Christmas gift to give! Can you imagine?

thanks, anon!

glad to have inspired you, high heels- i am a white christmas fanatic. every year i say i'll try something new, and every year i return to my white on white tree. i like white poinsettias too (but can't use them much because of the cat), and am on the hunt for a white wreath as mine didn't survive last year...

easy- the only thing i'm on schedule with is the tree- the rest of my life? not so much! and the champagne while decorating sounds perfect- you do know how to do things right!

happy backatcha, ivy!

may- i love that- all trees are beautiful, even the neglected, lopsided charlie brown numbers have their own special charm...

Stunning - in my head this sounds as if Jo Anne Worley were saying it.

This is our first Christmas with monsieur le pussycat, Boris, so there is some trepidation about the tree this year. I envisage much climbing and wanton destruction of ornaments. May have to revert to the fabric stuffed decorations I made many years ago when little rug rats were underfoot and into everything.

BTW - are poinsettias poisonous to cats? I think I read somewhere that they are, but since I didn't have one then (a cat, that is) I didn't pay that much attention. Thanks for the heads-up.

Gorgeous tree. Glad you're blogging again, although the puppies were captivating! Missed you guys!

thanks lauren- enjoy your decorating! it is rather fun, isn't it?

you are welcome, beaux monde- thanks for your kind words.

thanks, hobac, but now i'll have jo ann worley's voice ringing out in my head! and her voice in my head oddly morphs into charles nelson reilly's for some reason...

anon- i was quite worried putting the tree up when richard was a kitten. the thought of a glass ball exploding on him was too much to bear, so when i was putting the tree up, i kept the vacuum next to it. every time he curiously approached, i'd turn on the vacuum and he'd run away. worked like a charm, and we haven't had a incident yet. sounds a little cruel, but better than your 'lil boris injuring himself on glass shards.

and do be careful with the poinsettias- i also had one when richard ws a kitten, and i thought it was up high in an unreachable spot. it was NOT, and it made for a very expensive vet visit when i couldn't figure out why he such violent diarrhea. while waiting for lab results, i caught him chomping away one night at 3 in the morning, and it all fell into place.

Not a big fan of poinsettias anyway. Off to ponder tree deterrents; my vacuum is interesting rather than threatening. Probably b/c Boris and his canine brother Basil watched me assemble it. Or try. Or not. ejlc

I know, it is a lot of work, and I haven't bothered for some years, although in a wild and insane moment I thought of doing it this year. Normality has returned. But yours does look very "perty"!

Absolutely beautiful - and I adore the sentiment that all Christmas trees, like brides, are beautiful. Well put. I did laugh out loud at the description of the decorating. Stay tuned, ours goes up this weekend and it is never the magical tradition I envision.

I'm so glad you're back.

I loved your all white tree last year and it looks even more magical this year! I'm buying a tiny little tree in a pit this year. I hope I don't kill it before Christmas! Happy Holidays! XOXO to you and Mona and Richard
